Hi, I'm Ian!

I am an engineer, scientist, and currently a Postdoctoral Scholar and NIH T32 Fellow at the Cardiovascular Bioengineering Laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. My research projects surround using engineered, in vitro systems to study heart and liver development, disease, and failure.

Before starting at UAB, I earned a PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign , and have extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. My research in the Underhill Lab focused on engineering systems to investigate how mechanical and other microenviromental signals affect stem cell differentiation. Outside of the lab, I am passionate about engineering education, applying design principals to solve complex problems, and finding ways to serve my community.
